The Supreme Court declined to revisit its landmark same-sex marriage ruling, summarily rejecting an appeal from former Kentucky clerk Kim Davis, who sought to avoid paying $360,000 in damages and fees after denying a couple a license. Her lawyers cited Justice Clarence Thomas, a critic of the 2015 decision; Justices John Roberts and Samuel Alito did not urge overturning it, and Justice Amy Coney Barrett suggested reliance interests may set it apart from abortion. Human Rights Campaign president Kelley Robinson praised the move. Davis previously defied court orders, was jailed for contempt in September 2015, and later lost reelection.
