Newsom Slams ‘Pathetic’ Shutdown Deal as ‘Surrender’

California Gov. Gavin Newsom blasted a Senate agreement to end the record-long shutdown as a Democratic "surrender," joining Chuck Schumer, Bernie Sanders and Hakeem Jeffries in opposing it. The late night compromise would fund most agencies through January but punts on extending Affordable Care Act subsidies; GOP leader John Thune promised a separate December vote after reopening. The House must return to pass it before Donald Trump can sign. The package, negotiated by Sens. Jeanne Shaheen, Maggie Hassan and Angus King, also ensures rehiring and backpay for federal workers fired during the shutdown.
