UPS and FedEx grounded their MD-11 fleets late Friday, citing a manufacturer recommendation and safety concerns days after a UPS MD-11 crashed in Louisville, Kentucky. The accident occurred just after takeoff from Muhammad Ali International Airport, killing all three pilots and 11 people on the ground; investigators said the left engine detached from the wing, according to the NTSB. UPS said MD-11s make up about 9 percent of its fleet; FedEx has 28, roughly 4 percent. Both carriers activated contingency plans to limit disruption. Boeing did not immediately comment.
