Supreme Court Lets Trump Passport Policy Proceed

Read, Watch or Listen

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday allowed President Trump’s plan requiring passport applicants to list the sex on their birth certificate, overturning a lower court pause. The 6-3 order, not a final ruling, lets the policy take effect while litigation proceeds. Plaintiffs led by transgender man Ashton Orr say the rule harms transgender and nonbinary people and undermines identification; the government argues the injunction conflicted with foreign policy and scientific reality. The unsigned order called birth-sex notation a neutral historical fact. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, joined by two liberals, dissented, calling the move a “pointless but painful perversion.”
