Duffy warns shutdown could disrupt flights nationwide

Read, Watch or Listen

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned Sunday that nationwide flight delays and cancellations are likely as staffing shortages spread across air traffic control facilities during the government shutdown. In an interview on ABC’s This Week, conducted as Newark Liberty faced a ground stop, Duffy said safety comes first: “We will delay, we will cancel.” He noted added risk when controllers work multiple roles. The FAA says nearly half of major facilities are short-staffed, with controllers working without pay. Duffy cautioned the coming weeks could worsen and said the administration is scouring limited funds to pay staff.
