Orbán vows to bypass U.S. sanctions on Russia

Read, Watch or Listen

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said Budapest is working to circumvent new U.S. sanctions on Russian oil and gas firms, after President Donald Trump announced measures against Lukoil and Rosneft. He told Good Morning Hungary he has consulted MOL executives and insisted the battle is not over, arguing Hungary must keep buying Russian energy to protect utility costs. The sanctions could prompt Moscow to shut remaining oil pipelines to Europe, threatening Hungary’s Russia-dependent supplies. While much of the EU has reduced reliance since 2022, Hungary and Slovakia remain dependent; Croatia says it can cover their needs via the Adria pipeline.
