A children’s birthday party outside Washington DC turned tragic late Saturday when a driver plowed into people gathered outside a home, killing 31-year-old Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez and injuring at least 14 others, eight of them children. Police said the driver, a 66-year-old man from the area who fled on foot, later surrendered. Eleven victims were taken to local hospitals; children ranged from two to nine. Fire officials said a woman and a child were in critical condition. The hit-and-run was later reclassified as a fatal crash.
