Tomiichi Murayama, Japan’s former prime minister and author of the 1995 “Murayama statement” apologizing for wartime aggression, died Friday at 101 in his hometown of Oita, party leader Mizuho Fukushima said. The ex–Japan Socialist Party chief led a 1994–96 coalition, recognized the Japan-U.S. security alliance and Self-Defense Forces as constitutional, and faced the Kobe earthquake and Tokyo subway gas attack, drawing criticism for slow responses. He resigned in early 1996. In later years, he condemned efforts to dilute wartime responsibility and urged honest remembrance and closer ties with China.
