John Bolton, a former national security adviser to Donald Trump and an outspoken Republican critic of Trump, surrendered Friday to face federal charges that he mishandled classified material. An 18-count indictment in Maryland alleges Bolton transmitted and kept highly classified information, including diary notes he sent via personal email and a group chat to two people without clearances. The case was brought under the Espionage Act. Bolton and his lawyer deny wrongdoing. Trump called Bolton a “bad guy.” The probe gained momentum during the Biden administration and is viewed inside the justice department as stronger than some recent cases.
