G2 storm watch may boost northern lights

Read, Watch or Listen

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center issued a G2 geomagnetic storm watch for Oct. 16 as Earth is set to be hit by the first of several CMEs, with the strongest effects late Thursday into early Friday. The Kp index is forecast to peak between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. EDT at about 5.67. Auroras could be visible, weather and light pollution permitting, across parts of 15 U.S. states including Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Wyoming and Iowa. Seek dark, north-facing views, be patient, and monitor aurora apps.
