Trump Ties New Argentina Financing to Elections

The Trump administration is pursuing an additional $20 billion for Argentina, pairing sovereign funds and private banks with an earlier $20 billion U.S. swap line pledged to President Javier Milei to bolster the collapsing currency. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called the new facility a private‑sector solution and said interest is strong. After Donald Trump warned the aid could be pulled if Milei’s party loses the Oct. 26 midterms, the peso fell about 0.7% to 1,395 per dollar, while major Argentine shares rose slightly after steep losses. Opposition leaders denounced Trump’s stance.
