Judge weighs pause on shutdown-era federal layoffs

With the shutdown in its second week, a federal judge in San Francisco will hear unions’ bid to halt the Trump administration’s latest layoffs. AFGE and AFSCME seek a temporary restraining order to stop ongoing reductions in force and pause the 60-day notice clock, accusing the administration of using employees as political pawns. The administration says the court lacks jurisdiction and agencies are acting lawfully. RIF notices have reached more than 4,000 workers across several agencies, though counts are shifting; hundreds of CDC notices were later reversed after acknowledged errors.
