Over the past two months in the Eastern Pacific, the U.S. Coast Guard says it has seized more than 100,000 pounds of cocaine, averaging 1,600 pounds a day. Crews intercepted 34 vessels and detained 86 people under Operation Pacific Viper, working with international partners and deploying ships, aircraft and tactical teams. Photos show bales floating at sea and a suspected smuggling boat capsized. One September case netted 8,700 pounds from a boat traveling from Panama. Officials sometimes burn seized craft to prevent hazards. Rear Adm. Jeffrey Novak called the results "a remarkable achievement."
