Jim Caviezel will not reprise Jesus in Mel Gibson’s two-part follow-ups to The Passion of the Christ, with Monica Bellucci also absent as Mary Magdalene, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed. Lionsgate plans to release The Resurrection of the Christ in 2027, with production set to begin soon in Rome. Part One opens March 26, 2027—Good Friday—and Part Two arrives May 6, 2027, honoring Ascension Day. Key roles will be recast. Gibson, producing with Bruce Davey, previously saw the 2004 original earn more than $600 million worldwide and $370 million in North America.
