The International Criminal Court has convicted Ali Muhammad Ali Abd–Al-Rahman, a Janjaweed militia leader, for atrocities in Darfur over 20 years ago. He was found guilty of ordering mass executions and personally killing prisoners. This marks the ICC's first conviction for crimes in Darfur, ruling that the atrocities were part of a government plan to suppress rebellion. Abd–Al-Rahman faces a potential life sentence.
