A high military court in Congo has sentenced former President Joseph Kabila to death after convicting him of treason and war crimes for allegedly collaborating with rebels. The court also ordered him to pay billions in damages. Kabila was tried in absentia, and his current whereabouts are unknown. His political party has denounced the verdict as politically motivated, while victims' lawyers expressed satisfaction with the ruling. Kabila's immunity was previously repealed, and he returned to Congo earlier this year.
