Spirit Airlines plans to furlough approximately 1,800 flight attendants, about one-third of its cabin crew, due to financial struggles and its second bankruptcy within a year. The airline's COO cited the need to cut costs to return to profitability. While 800 flight attendants are already on voluntary leave, the airline will now offer voluntary furloughs before implementing involuntary furloughs starting December 1st. The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA is assisting affected members in finding new employment. Spirit is also pursuing significant cost cuts from its pilots.
