A Global Witness report reveals at least 146 land and environmental defenders were killed or disappeared globally in 2024, with Latin America accounting for over 80% of the cases. Colombia recorded the highest number of killings (48), followed by Guatemala (20) and Mexico (18). The report highlights the disproportionate impact on Indigenous communities and small-scale farmers, largely due to land disputes linked to mining, logging, and agribusiness. Organized crime, private security forces, and hitmen are implicated in numerous attacks. Despite the Escazu Agreement, weak implementation and lack of ratification hinder protection efforts.
