SpaceX has acquired 50MHz of wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar for $17 billion (cash and stock), facilitating its 'Direct to Cell' satellite internet service for mobile phones globally. This acquisition, partly spurred by FCC inquiry and reportedly influenced by President Trump, allows SpaceX greater operational freedom and enhanced 5G capabilities. The deal includes $2 billion in debt interest payments to EchoStar and grants Boost Mobile customers access to Starlink. SpaceX plans to launch upgraded satellites with significantly increased capacity.
