Spain's annual Tomatina festival saw 20,000 people from around the globe engage in a massive tomato fight, using 120 tons of overripe tomatoes. This year's event, themed "Tomaterapia" (Tomato Therapy), marked its 80th anniversary. The event, which began as a children's game in 1945, is now a major international attraction, paused only twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite concerns about waste, organizers stated the tomatoes are unsuitable for consumption and would otherwise be discarded. This year, a political element was added with the display of Palestinian flags during the festivities.
