Hurricane Katrina devastated Dauphin Island, Alabama, leaving a 1.5-mile gap in the west end beach and destroying over 300 homes. Twenty years later, the island continues to shrink due to storms and rising sea levels, facing an existential threat. The town has undertaken beach restoration projects using oil spill settlement money, but needs millions more for continued preservation. A federal grant program, BRIC, which was to provide crucial funding, was canceled, leaving Dauphin Island and other communities in limbo and facing potentially devastating consequences.
