A joint investigation by +972 Magazine, Local Call, and The Guardian, using a classified Israeli military database, reveals that at least 83% of the 53,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza by May 2025 were civilians. This contradicts Israeli government claims of a much lower civilian death toll. The database identified only 8,900 militants killed, representing just 17% of the total. The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry's figures don't differentiate between civilian and militant deaths. The Israeli military disputes the investigation's findings.
