Congo Rebels Kill 140 Civilians, Defying Peace Efforts

Human Rights Watch (HRW) accuses M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo of killing at least 140 civilians in July, despite ongoing peace negotiations. Witnesses describe mass killings using machetes and gunfire in multiple villages near Virunga National Park. The UN also reported similar atrocities, estimating over 300 deaths. HRW alleges Rwandan support for the M23, a claim Rwanda denies. The killings occurred despite a ceasefire agreement and ongoing peace talks, which the M23 recently suspended, citing unmet commitments by the Congolese government.
