Why Donetsk matters so much for Ukraine's defences

Reports suggest Russia wants to freeze the Ukraine war along the current front line in exchange for Ukraine surrendering the rest of the Donetsk region. Ukraine controls about 6,600 sq km of Donetsk, a strategically important area with significant fortifications and high ground. Losing western Donetsk would mean a loss of land, refugees, and a crucial defensive bulwark against future Russian advances. While Russia's military progress is slow elsewhere, Ukraine's military is unlikely to cede western Donetsk without a fight, especially due to its strategic importance and defensible terrain.
