Hollywood Seeks Federal Incentives, Small Victories Emerge

Jon Voight's May proposal to save Hollywood from decline is seeing behind-the-scenes progress. Independent producers are hopeful for a federal film incentive, potentially introduced bi-partisanly. While a large-scale incentive faces hurdles, including lack of Republican support, a bipartisan bill extending Section 181, a tax deduction for independent film producers, is gaining traction. This, along with potential reauthorization of Section 461, offers a more modest but significant step toward boosting the domestic film industry. The tariff threat on foreign films hasn't resurfaced, but a federal incentive could indirectly discourage overseas production.
