Niger investigating $5 million sale of largest Mars rock

A 54-pound Martian meteorite, the largest ever found on Earth, sold for over $5 million at a New York auction, setting a world record. However, Niger, where the meteorite was discovered, is investigating its sale, claiming possible illicit trafficking. The meteorite, named NWA 16788, was discovered in the Sahara Desert and subsequently sold through an international dealer. While Sotheby's claims all necessary documentation was in order, Niger's government has suspended the export of meteorites and other precious stones to improve traceability. Legal experts note that Niger needs to prove ownership and theft to reclaim the meteorite.
