Supersized stick insect discovered in Wet Tropics

Researchers have discovered Australia's heaviest insect, a new species of giant stick insect weighing approximately 44 grams. The Acrophylla alta species, measuring roughly 40cm, was identified through its unique egg characteristics and habitat in a remote, high-altitude rainforest. Its large size is possibly an adaptation to the cool, wet environment. Two specimens are now housed at the Queensland Museum to aid in future species identification and ecosystem conservation efforts.
