Six Chinese university students drowned in a mine flotation tank in Inner Mongolia after a grid plate collapsed. The students from Northeastern University were on a field trip observing the process when the accident occurred. One teacher was injured. Zhongjin Gold, the mine operator, confirmed the deaths and saw its stock price drop. The company had previously reported a 'zero accidents' safety goal in 2024, but articles detailing safety concerns were subsequently deleted from its online accounts. Mine safety remains a significant concern in China.
