Archaeologists have identified a centuries-old shipwreck on a Scottish island as the Earl of Chatham, an 18th-century warship that participated in the American War of Independence and later became a whaling ship. Discovered by a schoolboy in February 2024, the wreck's identification involved community participation and advanced scientific techniques. The 12 tons of oak timbers were recovered with the help of local farmers, and dendrochronology confirmed its 18th-century origins. The well-preserved timbers are now undergoing preservation at the Sanday Heritage Centre, showcasing a unique collaboration between scientists and the island community.
