China blocks US federal employee from leaving

The US State Department confirmed China has blocked a US Patent and Trademark Office employee from leaving, along with Wells Fargo banker Chenyue Mao. Both are subject to an 'exit ban,' a controversial Chinese practice used in various situations, including diplomatic leverage. The employee's reason is unclear, potentially linked to undisclosed government employment on his visa. Mao's ban is due to a criminal investigation. Wells Fargo has suspended employee travel to China. This is reportedly the first time a US government employee has faced an exit ban, raising concerns about the increasing use of this tactic by China.
