Extinct Bird, New Zealand's Moa, to Be Brought Back

Colossal Biosciences, known for its de-extinction projects, aims to resurrect the giant moa, a flightless bird extinct for nearly 600 years. The project, initiated by director Peter Jackson, involves collaboration with the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre, a Māori indigenous scholarship institute. The moa holds significant cultural importance for the Māori people. The company plans to use ancient DNA to sequence the bird's genome and hopes to have the first moas within 5-10 years. This initiative follows Colossal's successful creation of dire wolves and ongoing efforts to revive other extinct species, sparking both excitement and debate within the scientific community.
