Finland Makes New Move to Defend Itself From Russia

Finland's Parliament voted 157-18 to withdraw from the Ottawa Convention banning antipersonnel landmines, citing the need to bolster its defenses against Russia. This decision follows Finland's NATO accession and mirrors similar moves by Latvia and Lithuania. While the Ottawa Convention aims to eliminate landmines globally, Finland argues their use is necessary to defend its vast border. Critics, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, warn of increased civilian casualties resulting from this treaty withdrawal.
