Jaws at 50: Behind-the-Scenes Secrets Revealed

On the 50th anniversary of "Jaws," various behind-the-scenes facts are revealed. The mechanical shark was nicknamed "Bruce," the title's origin is uncertain, and the iconic poster derived from a novel's cover. Nantucket inspired the fictional Amity, while Dick Richards was initially slated to direct before Spielberg, who was 26 at the time. Charlton Heston was considered for Brody's role. The shark's frequent malfunctions, due to saltwater corrosion, led to a suspenseful narrative where the shark isn't fully shown until 81 minutes in. Roy Scheider's famous line, "You're gonna need a bigger boat," was improvised. Quint's backstory involving the USS Indianapolis was added by an uncredited screenwriter. Spielberg's voice is heard in the film, and the production significantly exceeded its schedule and budget.
