Scientists have discovered a new tyrannosaur species, *Khankhuuluu mongoliensis*, from 86-million-year-old skeletons in a Mongolian museum. This discovery, published in Nature, is considered a crucial ancestor to T.rex, rewriting the tyrannosaur family tree. The 750kg dinosaur represents a transitional stage, evolving from smaller, faster Jurassic predators to the massive apex predators of the later Cretaceous. Analysis revealed key skull features that foreshadowed the powerful bite force of later tyrannosaurs.
