A record-breaking 38 million tonnes of sargassum seaweed has inundated the Caribbean, surpassing the previous record of 22 million tonnes in 2022. This massive influx is causing significant environmental and economic damage, suffocating shorelines, harming wildlife, and disrupting tourism. The pungent smell from decaying seaweed has even forced school closures. While the exact cause remains unknown, factors like agricultural runoff and warming waters are suspected. Cleanup efforts are underway, but are expensive and pose challenges, particularly regarding the protection of sea turtle eggs. Scientists predict even larger amounts of sargassum in June.
