A massive Saharan dust cloud, the largest this year, blanketed the Caribbean on Monday, causing respiratory issues and reduced visibility. The cloud, stretching thousands of miles, is expected to reach parts of the US later this week. Forecasters warned vulnerable populations to take precautions, noting the high dust concentration, measured at 0.55 aerosol optical depth – the highest this year. While the cloud's intensity is expected to lessen as it moves, its impact on the Caribbean islands was significant, temporarily blocking sunlight in some areas. The annual Saharan Air Layer phenomenon typically occurs from April to October, and helps prevent hurricane formation.
