Northern Lights Visible in Chicago Due to Geomagnetic Storm

Read, Watch or Listen

A severe geomagnetic storm (G4) is causing the aurora borealis to be visible much farther south than usual, potentially including Chicago and other parts of the central US. Clear skies Sunday night into Monday morning increase viewing chances in Chicago, though the likelihood diminishes by Monday night. The storm, resulting from a coronal mass ejection, may affect GPS, power grids, and communications, but most systems have safeguards. While the storm is weakening, elevated solar wind conditions maintain its severity.
