Severe Geomagnetic Storm Strikes Earth, Disrupts Systems

Read, Watch or Listen

A severe G4 geomagnetic storm hit Earth between 6 AM and 12 PM UTC, potentially disrupting communications, power grids, navigation, and satellite operations. Bright auroras were visible as far south as Kansas and California. The storm, caused by a strong solar flare and coronal mass ejection (CME) from region 4100, is expected to peak again around 6 PM and 3 AM UTC. While the strongest this year, it's less intense than the May 10th G5 storm. NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) is monitoring the situation.
