A new study reveals a surprisingly high death rate from takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC), also known as 'broken heart syndrome', affecting 6.5% of patients. While more common in women, men experienced over twice the mortality rate (11.2% vs 5.5%). The study, encompassing 199,890 US patients (2016-2020), suggests higher mortality may be linked to men's higher incidence of physically-stressed induced TC. Researchers call for increased awareness and further research into improved treatment and prevention of this often misdiagnosed condition, which presents with symptoms similar to heart attacks.
