US Cities Sinking: Groundwater Extraction Causes Subsidence

Read, Watch or Listen

A new study reveals that most of America's largest cities are sinking due to excessive groundwater extraction, with Houston experiencing the most significant subsidence. At least 20% of each city studied is subsiding, and in 25 of 28, over 65% is affected. This "invisible threat" compromises infrastructure and increases flood risks. The study, using high-resolution satellite data, provides crucial information for urban planning and disaster preparedness. While some cities show minor uplift, it's negligible compared to the overall sinking trend. Continued population growth and water usage are expected to worsen the problem.
