Wegovy Shows Promise in Treating Serious Liver Disease

Read, Watch or Listen

A major clinical trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine reveals that Wegovy, a weight-loss drug, successfully treated a serious liver disease, MASH, in approximately two-thirds of participants. The 72-week trial, funded by Novo Nordisk, involved 800 patients who received either semaglutide (Wegovy's active ingredient) or a placebo. Semaglutide resulted in a significant reduction in liver inflammation and fibrosis, along with an average 10.5% weight loss. Novo Nordisk anticipates an FDA decision on Wegovy's approval for MASH by year's end, marking a potential breakthrough treatment for this prevalent and often debilitating condition. While side effects were noted, they were generally manageable and did not lead to a significant dropout rate.
