Australian election campaigns have been temporarily suspended following the death of Pope Francis. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton both paused campaigning to pay tribute, attending masses and lowering government flags to half-mast. While campaigning is halted for the day, a scheduled televised debate between the leaders is expected to proceed as planned. Australian cardinals will travel to Rome for the papal conclave.
