The Trump administration is considering new tariffs on semiconductors, citing national security concerns. This follows the recent exemption of certain electronics from reciprocal tariffs. National Economic Council director Kevin Hassett stated that an investigation under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 is underway to determine which semiconductor imports need to be restricted to protect US interests. The potential tariffs, similar to those on steel and aluminum, aim to address the significant Chinese involvement in US weapons systems and encourage domestic semiconductor production. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick indicated that the electronics tariff exemptions are temporary, to be replaced by the upcoming semiconductor tariffs.
