Palestinian human rights advocate Mohsen Mahdawi, a Columbia University student, was released from immigration detention after two weeks. Detained by ICE under the Trump administration, he faced deportation without due process for his advocacy. Mahdawi's case, highlighted in a New York Times op-ed, warns of a descent into authoritarianism in the US, citing the suppression of dissent and the targeting of those critical of Israeli policy. A judge criticized the Trump administration's actions, comparing them to the McCarthy era. Mahdawi, released on bail, vows to continue his activism.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson delivered a powerful speech at a judicial conference, condemning threats and harassment against judges from President Trump and his allies. She described the attacks as attempts to intimidate judges and undermine democracy. Jackson, a former district court judge, highlighted the unique challenges faced by these judges, who often bear the brunt of personalized attacks. Her speech, praised by legal commentators, served as a strong defense of the judiciary and a message of support for judges facing adversity.

A Washington DC judge deemed President Trump's executive order targeting law firm Perkins Coie unconstitutional, voiding it. The order, issued in March, suspended security clearances and reviewed government contracts due to the firm's work for Hillary Clinton in 2016. The ruling cited violations of free speech and due process rights. The decision has implications for other law firms that reached deals with the Trump administration, with some companies already severing ties with firms that settled, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest and the impact on client representation.

The White House clarified that President Trump's announcement to rename Veterans Day as "Victory Day for World War I" will be an additional proclamation, not a replacement. Trump also proposed designating May 8 as "Victory Day for World War II." However, establishing a new federal holiday requires congressional action, unlike a presidential proclamation.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) defiantly responded to White House border czar Tom Homan, who questioned whether her informing constituents of their rights was impeding deportation efforts. Homan reportedly threatened to refer Ocasio-Cortez to the Justice Department for her "Know Your Rights with ICE" webinar. Ocasio-Cortez challenged Homan to pursue legal action, emphasizing the importance of exercising constitutional rights. This follows similar controversies involving Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, who faced Homan's threats after providing guidance to state employees on interactions with immigration agents.

President Trump fired National Security Adviser Mike Waltz for allegedly collaborating with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to pressure the US into attacking Iran. The Washington Post reports Waltz's actions, including involvement in a Signal chat discussing a Yemen attack and advocating for military action against Iran during Netanyahu's White House visit, angered Trump. This incident highlights an internal administration struggle between those favoring diplomacy with Iran and those pushing for military intervention.

Ukrainian President Zelensky lauded his recent Vatican meeting with Donald Trump as their most productive, focusing on US sanctions and Ukrainian air defenses. Zelensky stated they discussed a potential 30-day ceasefire as a first step. Following the meeting, the US and Ukraine signed a crucial minerals deal, involving a joint investment fund potentially including military aid. Zelensky rejected a short Russian ceasefire proposal, deeming it insufficient, and warned against enabling Putin's isolation during Victory Day celebrations.

A federal appeals court temporarily blocked an executive order that shut down Voice of America (VoA), allowing it to resume broadcasting next week. The order, signed by President Trump, dismantled several agencies including the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which oversees VoA. While VoA's operations will restart, a funding freeze for other USAGM-funded broadcasters, like Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, remains in place. The court ruling partially upheld a lower court's decision that the executive order exceeded presidential authority. VoA staff are expected to return to work next week.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese secured a second term, defying expectations and potentially increasing his party's majority. His Labor Party campaigned against the opposition's perceived imitation of Donald Trump's policies, a strategy that appears to have resonated with voters. The election saw high prices and energy policy as major issues, with Labor advocating for renewable energy and the opposition proposing nuclear power. Despite a cost-of-living crisis affecting millions, Albanese's victory marks a significant win for his center-left government, contrasting sharply with the misfortunes of other opposition leaders who embraced Trump-like strategies in their respective elections.

The Trump administration has seemingly reversed its earlier proposal to eliminate funding for the Head Start early education program. While the recently released budget summary omitted Head Start, concerns remain due to planned cuts to related regional offices and staff, causing funding delays and impacting program stability. Advocates express worry about the indirect impact of other proposed education and social program cuts on Head Start families, even though the program itself wasn't explicitly targeted for elimination in this budget.
