President Trump announced that Washington, D.C. will host the 2027 NFL Draft on the National Mall. The announcement, made alongside Commanders owner Josh Harris, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, anticipates over a million attendees. This follows the recent proposal for a new Commanders stadium in D.C., slated to open in 2030. The event marks a seemingly improved relationship between Trump and the NFL, contrasting with past tensions. The 2027 draft is expected to significantly boost D.C.'s tourism and economy.

The White House proposed a 2026 budget with significant cuts to healthcare programs, particularly at the CDC and NIH. These cuts, totaling $18 billion for the NIH and $3.6 billion for the CDC, aim to reduce perceived waste and target programs deemed partisan. The budget eliminates funding for certain initiatives, including those focused on minority health disparities and climate change research. While the proposal faces strong opposition from Democrats, Republicans support the cuts as a way to improve fiscal discipline. The budget's impact on healthcare access and research remains a point of contention.

Former National Security Advisor John Bolton criticizes President Trump's decision to appoint Marco Rubio as interim national security advisor while also serving as Secretary of State. Bolton argues this unprecedented dual role, mirroring only Henry Kissinger's in the 1970s, diminishes Trump's control over the State Department and national security agencies. He suggests Trump's distrust of the NSC staff motivates the move, potentially leading to less informed presidential decisions. The change follows the removal of Mike Waltz as national security advisor, a move Bolton interprets as exile.

Twenty attorneys general, led by New York's Letitia James, sued the Trump administration for its mass firings and restructuring of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The lawsuit alleges the administration violated numerous laws by consolidating HHS agencies from 28 to 15 and laying off approximately 20,000 employees. The cuts impacted critical programs, including those for infectious disease research, mental health, and low-income assistance. The attorneys general claim these actions endanger public health and violate congressional authority. They are seeking a preliminary injunction to halt further cuts.

Five pro-Palestine protesters were arrested in Wageningen, Netherlands, on Monday during a World War II liberation anniversary event. The arrests, for disturbing public order, occurred amidst a demonstration of 250-300 protesters opposing the Israel-Gaza conflict and criticizing the Dutch government's response. A smoke bomb was reportedly thrown during a speech by the Dutch Prime Minister. The event also included the participation of several World War II veterans.

Emmitsburg, Maryland, a town that largely supported Trump's cost-cutting agenda, is now facing the consequences. The Trump administration's abrupt cancellation of in-person classes at the National Fire Academy, a crucial part of Emmitsburg's economy and identity, has left residents puzzled and worried. While the administration cites travel cost reductions, residents argue that the cancellation jeopardizes firefighter training and public safety. Local businesses are already feeling the economic impact, and elected officials are demanding answers from the administration, expressing bafflement at the decision.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" exhibition, showcasing five years of work to diversify the Costume Institute, opens amid a changed political climate. President Trump's actions targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in cultural institutions, including threats to withhold funding from exhibits deemed 'divisive,' create a stark contrast to the exhibition's original intent and the hopes surrounding its launch.

French President Macron and European Commission President von der Leyen are urging researchers to relocate to Europe, citing the Trump administration's crackdown on US scientific research. Macron criticized the US's actions as threatening its economy and democracy, highlighting the suppression of research in areas like vaccination and climate change. Von der Leyen announced a €500 million package to attract researchers to Europe by 2027, while Macron pledged an additional €100 million for France. The UK is also planning a similar initiative to attract research talent. Europe aims to capitalize on the situation by promoting scientific freedom and easing immigration processes for researchers.

Former Vice President Mike Pence received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for upholding the Constitution during the 2020 election. Pence refused to overturn election results despite pressure from President Trump, emphasizing the Constitution's role in unifying the nation. His actions on January 6th, 2021, are lauded as preserving the peaceful transfer of power. In contrast, Trump's recent comments on due process remain noncommittal, highlighting the differing stances of the two former colleagues. Pence's speech stressed the importance of constitutional principles and finding common ground, even amidst political divisions.
