California Governor Gavin Newsom urged cities and counties to ban homeless encampments, offering model legislation to remove them. The proposal, met with resistance from local governments citing insufficient funding and a need for long-term solutions, includes provisions for notice and shelter offers before encampment removal. Homeless advocates argue such bans worsen the situation, while some cities are already enacting stricter measures. Newsom may tie state funding to compliance, potentially leveraging $3.3 billion in mental health and substance abuse grants.

Popular streamer Hasan Piker, known for his pro-Gaza views, claims he was detained for hours at a US airport upon returning from France. He alleges the detention was politically motivated, citing questioning about his views on the Middle East and Donald Trump. US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) denies targeting him, stating the inspection was routine and lawful. Piker's account follows similar incidents involving student protesters with pro-Palestine views, sparking concerns about suppression of free speech.

The Real ID Act, mandating federally compliant IDs for domestic flights since May 7th, impacts non-citizens. While various forms of identification are accepted, immigration experts express concern that carrying foreign passports might lead to increased scrutiny. The Real ID doesn't guarantee protection from immigration enforcement; separate documentation is needed to prove current legal status. Non-citizens with temporary status can obtain temporary Real IDs, but the process and validity vary by state.

Avelo Airlines, a budget carrier, has begun conducting federal deportation flights from Arizona, sparking a boycott and criticism from its flight attendants' union. The union cites safety concerns due to the handcuffed and shackled passengers. Avelo, which claims profitability, defends the move as job-protecting, while protesters outside Arizona and Connecticut airports denounce the partnership with ICE. Details of the agreement remain undisclosed, raising questions about the financial arrangements. This marks a shift from the typical use of charter carriers by ICE for deportations.

The newly elected Pope Leo XIV's older brother, Lou Prevost, has a history of controversial far-right Facebook posts, expressing strong anti-Democratic, anti-LGBTQ+, and anti-immigrant views. Despite their differing political ideologies, Lou predicts his brother's papacy will be apolitical. However, Leo's past social media activity suggests some divergence from Trump's policies, including support for statements criticizing family separations at the border. While Lou claims they have disagreements, his posts have drawn criticism, leading to some questioning the new Pope's stance.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that fishing disputes shouldn't hinder a UK-EU security and defence pact, despite ongoing negotiations. While some elements of the deal remain unsettled, Kallas expressed optimism. The summit next week in London aims to announce the pact, which could boost UK involvement in EU defence projects. However, fishing rights, particularly France's desire for long-term access, and a youth mobility scheme remain sticking points. The UK's Conservative party opposes the youth mobility plan, fearing it undermines Brexit. A Gibraltar agreement is also deemed necessary for a comprehensive UK-EU relationship.

The White House celebrated a tariff reduction deal with China as a trade victory, while The Wall Street Journal criticized it as a major retreat by President Trump. The agreement saw a significant lowering of tariffs by both the US and China, ending a phase of the trade war. However, the Journal argues that the deal lacks broader concessions on key trade issues and that Trump's trade policies have damaged US alliances and economic reliability. The Journal's negative assessment reflects ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and the publication.
