A federal judge expressed frustration with the Trump administration's efforts to block the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from El Salvador. Judge Paula Xinis deemed the State Department's claim of state secrets insufficient, demanding more transparency. She unsealed Secretary Rubio's declaration, ordered an update with justifications, and allowed Abrego Garcia's lawyers to depose additional officials. The judge rejected the government's assertion of compliance, stating she would not grant further delays.

The Trump administration appealed to the Supreme Court to overturn a lower court's injunction halting mass federal employee firings and agency reorganizations. This follows a lawsuit by unions and others challenging the administration's downsizing efforts, impacting over 121,000 federal workers. A California court ruled that Trump must follow lawful procedures, including consulting Congress for large-scale reorganizations. The administration argues the injunction maintains an inefficient workforce and prevents necessary cost savings, while also contesting the release of sensitive information. The Supreme Court's decision will significantly impact the President's ability to restructure the federal government.

The National Weather Service (NWS) faces a critical staffing shortage, prompting internal reassignments to fill over 150 vacant positions. This follows the Trump administration's firings and incentivized early retirements. At least eight forecasting offices have halted or plan to halt overnight operations due to understaffing, raising concerns about public safety. Critics argue the reassignments are a temporary fix for deeper, long-term issues, including a hiring freeze and the loss of experienced personnel. The NWS acknowledges temporary service adjustments but maintains its commitment to accurate forecasts.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis issued an executive order linking over $100 million in state grants to local compliance with new state housing laws. The order requires cities and counties to demonstrate adherence to laws promoting housing affordability and increased capacity to be eligible for grants in areas like transportation and energy. While some local governments oppose this approach, arguing it overrides local authority, Polis maintains it ensures statewide housing goals are met and incentivizes proactive housing solutions. The changes to grant guidelines will take effect October 6th.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is reviewing a reality TV show pitch where immigrants compete for US citizenship. Producer Rob Worsoff envisions the show, tentatively titled "The American," as a positive portrayal of the American dream. The show would feature challenges showcasing American culture and heritage, with contestants ultimately vying for expedited citizenship. DHS confirms receiving numerous show pitches annually, stating this one is in the early stages of review and hasn't been approved or denied.

Five House Republicans, including Rep. Andrew Clyde of Georgia, defied party leadership and voted against the GOP's budget plan. Their concerns centered on insufficient spending cuts, delayed Medicaid work requirements (starting 2029), and an unfair Medicaid funding formula disadvantaging non-expansion states. The plan's projected $12 trillion deficit increase further fueled their opposition. Despite pressure from President Trump, the revolt stalled the bill's progress, prompting criticism from fellow Republicans and mockery from Democrats. Clyde expressed hope for future compromise to pass a revised bill.

A Texas federal judge overturned EEOC guidance protecting against workplace harassment based on gender identity and sexual orientation. Judge Kacsmaryk ruled the EEOC exceeded its authority, deeming the guidance inconsistent with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and Supreme Court precedent. The guidance, updated in 2022, addressed issues like pronoun usage and restroom access. Texas and the Heritage Foundation challenged the guidance, arguing it created mandatory standards. While the EEOC says the guidance isn't legally binding, the judge disagreed. This decision is a setback for LGBTQIA+ worker protections and has been met with criticism from advocacy groups.

Twenty-five M1 Abrams tanks will roll through Washington D.C. on June 14th for the Army's 250th birthday parade, coinciding with President Trump's 79th birthday. To protect the city's streets from the tanks' weight, the Army will use large metal plates at key points along the parade route. The parade, costing an estimated $25-45 million, will feature thousands of troops, 150 vehicles, and 50 helicopters, culminating in a fireworks display. D.C. Mayor Bowser previously requested funding for any road repairs resulting from the parade.

House Republicans unexpectedly included a clause in their tax bill that would prohibit states from regulating artificial intelligence for ten years. This would benefit the AI industry, which prefers uniform federal regulation. However, the provision faces an uphill battle in the Senate due to procedural hurdles and bipartisan interest in federal AI regulation. While some senators support a national framework, concerns about federal overreach and the need for state-level protections remain, creating uncertainty about the clause's future.

Congressional Democrats are challenging over $3 billion in proposed arms sales to Qatar and the UAE, approved by the State Department before President Trump's Middle East visit. The sales include helicopters, drones, bombs, and F-16 components. Senator Christopher Murphy introduced resolutions to block the sales, citing concerns over bypassing a standard review period for the UAE sale, allowing no time for lawmaker input.
