Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) faces federal assault charges for allegedly assaulting law enforcement officers during a protest outside an ICE detention facility. Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba announced the charges, stating that McIver's actions cannot be overlooked. McIver claims the charges are politically motivated, while House Democrats issued a statement defending her and vowing a response. Charges against Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, also present at the protest, were dropped.

Former President Trump's desire for a new Air Force One, hampered by delays in the Boeing contract, led to a secret deal. The Trump administration accepted a free luxury Boeing 747-8 from Qatar to serve as Air Force One. This solution bypassed the delayed $3.9 billion Boeing contract and involved secret coordination between Washington and Doha, with the Pentagon, White House military office, and Trump's envoy playing key roles. The aging current Air Force One planes, used since the George H.W. Bush presidency, needed urgent replacement.

The incident occurred during a protest alongside Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, whose trespassing charge was dropped. McIver denies wrongdoing, claiming the officers escalated the situation. The case is seen by Democrats as political retaliation against oversight of immigration policy, while the Trump administration defends its actions, emphasizing the importance of protecting law enforcement.

Charles Kushner, father of Jared Kushner and a pardoned former convict, has been confirmed as the US Ambassador to France by a 51-45 Senate vote. His confirmation comes amidst strained US-European relations, particularly with France, stemming from Trump's policies. Kushner, a real estate developer, pledged to strengthen ties and encourage increased French defense spending and alignment with US security goals. His past includes convictions for tax evasion and witness tampering, a matter raised during his confirmation hearing. Despite concerns, Kushner secured confirmation with one Democrat's support.

The Senate advanced the bipartisan GENIUS Act, a cryptocurrency regulation bill, with a 66-32 vote. This follows Democrats' initial blockade two weeks prior. An amendment addressing consumer protection and limiting tech company involvement in stablecoins unlocked Democratic support. While some Democrats remain concerned about the Trump family's crypto dealings and lack of stronger provisions, others prioritized establishing a regulatory framework for stablecoins, arguing that the US cannot ignore the growing cryptocurrency market. The bill's future in the House remains uncertain.

The Senate confirmed Charles Kushner as the US Ambassador to France and Monaco by a 51-45 vote. President Trump nominated Kushner, a businessman with a past conviction for tax evasion and campaign finance violations, who received a presidential pardon. Kushner, father of former White House advisor Jared Kushner, acknowledged past mistakes but argued they improved his judgment. His confirmation faced bipartisan opposition.

A mass exodus of attorneys from the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division is underway, with approximately 70% of its lawyers leaving since President Trump's inauguration. The Trump administration is dramatically reshaping the division, shifting its focus from traditional civil rights enforcement to enforcing the president's executive orders. This includes initiatives targeting alleged radical indoctrination in schools and combating what the administration terms antisemitism and anti-Christian bias. Former and current officials describe this as a dismantling of the division's original mission and a perversion of the separation of powers. The changes, spearheaded by the division's new head Harmeet Dhillon, have led to the dropping of investigations and withdrawal from numerous cases related to voting rights and discrimination.

The Supreme Court is considering whether to limit nationwide injunctions blocking President Trump's executive order that would end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants. A ruling against the injunctions could lead to a situation where birthright citizenship is determined by state, creating a chaotic system. This could leave newborns stateless in some states, while granting citizenship in others, depending on their location at birth. Experts warn of legal battles, increased costs for states, and potential for families to be separated and wrongly deported.

The House Republicans advanced a massive tax cut and border security bill after negotiations with conservative members who had initially blocked it due to deficit concerns. The bill, dubbed "The One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act," includes permanent extensions of Trump-era tax cuts and new temporary ones. While some modifications were made, including addressing concerns about Medicaid work requirements, disagreements remain, particularly regarding the speed of implementation and the overall impact on the national debt. The bill now moves to the Senate, where further changes are anticipated.
