Israel accepted a US-brokered deal, based on the Witkoff framework, for the return of hostages held by Hamas. However, Hamas continues to reject the proposal, leading to a stalemate in negotiations. While a senior Israeli negotiating team returned home, a smaller team remains in Doha to signal continued willingness to negotiate. The Qatari Prime Minister cited irreconcilable differences, blaming Israel's actions for the deadlock. Meanwhile, Israeli families of hostages express skepticism about the government's commitment to their release.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett, who last year urged President Biden to end his re-election campaign, feels vindicated following Biden's prostate cancer diagnosis. A new book, "Original Sin," details concerns among Democrats about Biden's fitness for office, which were dismissed by his staff. While some Democrats express sympathy for Biden, others, like Rep. Swalwell, believe a leadership change earlier would have benefitted the party. The diagnosis has fueled Republican speculation, forcing Democrats to defend Biden and look forward.

Following Romania's presidential election, US tech moguls Elon Musk and David Sacks, both Trump advisors, questioned the election's legitimacy, alleging irregularities and criticizing the disqualification of a pro-Russia candidate. Their claims contradict the US embassy's observation of the voting process and the congratulatory message from the interim head of mission to the president-elect. Musk amplified allegations of French government censorship, while Sacks accused the EU of a 'quiet coup'. The White House has not commented on their statements, which contrast sharply with the official US position.

The Trump administration's FDA announced new restrictions on COVID-19 vaccine approvals, limiting fall booster shots to seniors and high-risk individuals. This policy shift, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, requires larger studies for healthier populations before widespread approval, marking a departure from previous annual recommendations for all adults. The decision has sparked criticism from experts concerned about reduced vaccine access and insurance coverage, potentially impacting millions who previously received annual boosters. This comes after the FDA's recent approval of Novavax's vaccine with similar restrictions and follows a series of moves under Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to scrutinize COVID-19 vaccine use.

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are pushing for a complete repeal of the EU's corporate sustainability directive. This move, aligning with a growing anti-green sentiment in the European Parliament, represents a significant escalation of the EU's pro-business agenda. Many businesses oppose the directive due to its stringent supply chain requirements. While previously not seriously considered, a full repeal is now under discussion, potentially significantly weakening the European Green Deal.

Senators questioned Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem about FEMA's response to recent devastating storms. Republican senators, including Josh Hawley (MO), pressed for expedited disaster declarations for Missouri and other states facing significant damage and loss of life. While some states reported positive on-the-ground FEMA responses, concerns remain regarding FEMA's effectiveness due to proposed cuts and staff reductions under the Trump administration. The conflicting accounts highlight the disorganized nature of disaster response under the current administration.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio faced tough questioning from Senate Democrats during a hearing on the State Department's budget. Democrats criticized his handling of El Salvador's President Bukele, specifically the deportation of a Maryland resident, Kilmar Abrego Garcia. A heated exchange ensued between Rubio and Senator Chris Van Hollen, with Van Hollen drawing parallels between the administration's policies and McCarthy-era tactics. Rubio defended his actions, emphasizing the executive branch's independence in foreign policy matters.

Vladimir Medinsky, head of Russia's delegation in Ukraine talks, referenced the Great Northern War, suggesting Russia's willingness for a protracted conflict. He compared Ukraine's potential resistance to Sweden's during the war, implying a long fight. Medinsky's comments follow a recent phone call between Putin and Trump, which failed to yield progress towards a peace agreement. Putin's ambition mirrors Peter the Great's, aiming for a decisive victory through prolonged warfare and drawn-out negotiations.

Wisconsin Appeals Court Judge Chris Taylor, a vocal abortion rights supporter, announced her candidacy for the state Supreme Court. She challenges incumbent conservative Justice Rebecca Bradley, who sided with Trump in his 2020 election challenge. This race, though not impacting the court's overall liberal majority (4-3), is significant because a win for Taylor would expand that majority to 5-2. Taylor insists her judicial record proves impartiality, while Republicans label her 'radical'. The election is in 2026, and the court faces crucial cases on abortion and redistricting.

U.S. immigration authorities are fining thousands of migrants who failed to leave the country after deportation orders, with penalties reaching $1.8 million. The fines, stemming from a 1996 law, are part of the Trump administration's 'self-deportation' plan. Affected individuals, including Wendy Ortiz, a meatpacking plant worker fined $1.8 million, have 30 days to contest the penalties. Immigration lawyers express bewilderment at the high fines and the unclear process for collection, especially given the financial hardship on those fined, many of whom are low-income and have U.S. citizen family members.
