Russian President Vladimir Putin continues his war in Ukraine while pursuing a negotiated peace on his terms. His hardline stance, resisting calls for an immediate ceasefire, has withstood pressure from Ukraine and the West. A recent phone call between Putin and President Trump revealed that Trump now supports direct peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, a shift from his previous stance. However, this diplomatic success for Putin might hinder his economic goals of normalized US relations and sanctions relief, as Trump conditions economic rapprochement on a Ukrainian peace agreement.

Labour leader Keir Starmer has performed a U-turn on his party's policy to means-test winter fuel allowance for pensioners, a decision made nearly a year ago. The policy, widely criticized and blamed for poor election results, will be revised in the autumn budget. This reversal comes amid internal party pressure and speculation, aiming to appease concerned MPs. While the government maintains its stance on other welfare cuts, the U-turn may be viewed by the public as either pragmatic strength or ideological weakness.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, a progressive reformer, won his primary election, securing a second term. Despite criticism from his opponent, who argued Krasner's policies led to increased crime, voters supported Krasner's approach, which focuses on rehabilitation and reducing mass incarceration. Krasner's policies include dropping marijuana possession charges and limiting cash bail. His victory is seen as a testament to the continued popularity of progressive criminal justice reform in Philadelphia.

House Speaker Mike Johnson announced an agreement on state tax deductions, paving the way for a $3 trillion-plus fiscal bill to reach the House floor. The bill, a key part of Trump's second-term agenda, includes significant tax cuts and spending reductions, despite opposition from some Republicans and concerns about rising national debt. The bill's passage would be a major political win for Trump, but it has also spooked investors due to its potential impact on the US fiscal position. The Senate must still approve the legislation, with Democrats expected to oppose it. The bill's projected increase in national debt has already resulted in a credit rating downgrade.

Professor Ali Khan, a Muslim scholar in India, was detained for sedition over a social media post praising a female Colonel. The post, which also criticized right-wing commentators and the BJP's politics, prompted an FIR alleging "anti-national" remarks. However, the Haryana State Women Commission Chairperson, who filed the complaint, failed to identify specific offensive statements during a televised interview, highlighting the lack of evidence supporting the sedition charge. This has led to widespread criticism from civil society, rights groups, and the Indian media.

Rep. Chip Roy, a fiscal conservative, is the key holdout against President Trump's reconciliation bill. Roy, despite facing pressure from Trump and his party, demands significant spending cuts, particularly to Medicaid. While negotiations are ongoing, Roy's opposition could derail the bill, requiring only a few more Republican votes to defeat it. His stance reflects a broader tension within the GOP between fiscal hawks and those prioritizing party unity. Despite previous clashes, Roy is engaged in ongoing talks with the White House, leaving the bill's fate uncertain.

International students at US universities, particularly those of Palestinian descent, are facing deportation threats for their pro-Palestinian activism. Following the arrests of several students, others are grappling with the decision to continue protesting despite the risk of visa cancellation and detention. Fear of being targeted by pro-Israel groups and the government's aggressive actions have led some to self-censor or leave the US, while others remain steadfast in their advocacy, even at personal risk. The Trump administration's actions have raised concerns about free speech and due process rights on college campuses.

Jimmy Kimmel criticized President Trump's proposed bill, highlighting its potential to increase the national debt, cut essential services, and eliminate sales tax on gun silencers. Kimmel satirically linked the bill's provisions to the administration's dismissal of climate scientists, arguing that ignoring problems doesn't solve them. He used humor to point out the bill's seemingly contradictory approach to addressing national issues.

House Republicans propose slashing nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid and food stamps, impacting millions. The cuts, part of a broader agenda, would significantly reduce federal support, potentially leading to coverage losses for vulnerable populations, including children and seniors. Work requirements for Medicaid recipients would be implemented, adding bureaucratic hurdles. States would bear increased costs, potentially impacting services and leading to tax hikes. Food stamp changes could extend work requirements and increase state funding obligations, threatening economic stability for some communities. Experts warn of unpredictable consequences and severe impacts on hospitals and healthcare providers.

The Justice Department has launched an investigation into former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's testimony to Congress regarding COVID-19 nursing home deaths. The probe follows a Republican-led House referral alleging Cuomo lied under oath, claiming he wasn't involved in drafting a state report on the issue, despite evidence suggesting otherwise. Cuomo's spokesperson calls the investigation politically motivated. This action comes after the DOJ dropped charges against mayoral rival Eric Adams, a decision that sparked controversy and accusations of a quid pro quo. The timing of the Cuomo investigation, close to the mayoral election, has fueled further speculation about political interference.
